Colombia: Record Low Level of Coca Cultivation in 2012

From lainformacion.com on August 8, 2013- According the 2012 Coca Monitoring Report, the cultivation of coca in Colombia was at its lowest level in 2012. 48,000 hectares were cultivated in 2012, representing a 25% reduction compared to 2011. Potential cocaine production fell by 10% to 309 tons. According to UNDOC officials, this report confirms that the trend of reducing coca acreage that began in 2007 remains in 2012. In addition, this is the largest reduction in coca cultivation since the monitoring project began in 2001. However, the UN stressed the need for replanting the eradicated areas with legal crops, so the real challenge is the sustainability of the figures.
