Paraiba, Brazil: Prison Cells Designed to Protect LGBT Rights

Globo reported on September 14, 2013 that three prisons in Paraíba created special cells to protect homosexual and transvestite detainees who report allegations of homophobia and sexual abuse against them. Prior to this, the detainees had to reside in the common cells in which they were forced to have sex with other prisoners. Among other issue of concern seen as a form of violence, is the cutting of hair in which many transsexuals spend years trying to grow. The Secretary of Penitentiary Administration of Paraiba says this reform aims to protect and respect the rights of the LGBT community. The president of the MEL stated “this is a victory in the pursuit of human rights”. Read Article
