Brazilian Political Leader Suspected of Environmental Crime in Alagoas

On January 10, 2013, A Tarde (Bahia) reported that Brazil’s Attorney General requested an investigation surrounding the leader of the Brazil Democratic Movement Party (PMDB) in the Federal Senate, Renan Calheiros, of Alagoas. Calheiros is a stockholder in Agropecuária Alagoas Ltda., responsible for constructing a 700-meter cobblestone path through a federally-protected natural reserve in the state of Alagoas. The reserve is located in Flexeiras, about 66 kilometers from Maceió, the state capital. The company did not seek authorization from the Instituto Chico Mendes, the group that administers the reserve, beforehand.  Read Article
