Brazilian Federal Police Investigates Espionage Scheme in Brasília

On January 5, 2013, Diário Regional reported that the Brazilian Federal Police launched an investigation into an illicit spy network believed to be targeting numerous federal officials, including President Dilma Rousseff. Federal Deputy Miro Teixeira (PDT-RJ) was responsible for presenting documents that began the investigation. Federal Police currently are investigating the messages’ potential ties to organized crime, including to recently convicted businessman and illegal gambling boss Carlinhos Cachoeira. Networks of spies exist throughout the country, according to Federal Deputy Marcos Leôncio Sousa Ribeiro, and are difficult to track, concentrating primarily on major Brazilian cities as well as the federal capital.
