Brazil: President of Federal Senate Faces Electoral Challenge

On January 15, 2013, DM.com.br reported that Renan Calheiros (PMDB-AL) will have a challenger in the elections for President of the Federal Senate, to be held by secret ballot on February 1.  Senator Randolfe Rodrigues (PSOL-AP), with the support of ten independent senators, announced his candidacy yesterday, calling on members to seek reform.  The independent senators composed a manifesto outlining a framework for reform, which they say was created to combat recent controversies involving Calheiros and the current President of the Federal Senate, José Sarney (PMDB-AP).  Read Article
