BRAZIL: Politician Convicted in National Scandal Takes Power Again

On January 3, 2013, Jornal Nacional reported that José Genoíno, recently convicted on corruption charges related to the Mensalão scandal, was installed as a federal deputy for the new term. Genoíno served as president of the Workers’ Party (PT) from 2002-2005. He will represent the PT once again as a federal deputy from São Paulo, having held the same office from 1982-2002. Brazil’s Supreme Federal Tribunal indicated that until all charges are finalized and decided, those convicted are not required to report to prison. Genoíno could be forced out of power, however, if the case closes before his term ends. Read Article
