Brazil: International Anti-Trafficking Campaign Receives 80 Calls in 2012

On February 5, 2013, Diário do Nordeste reported that the Ligue 180 campaign, aimed at combating the trafficking of women from Brazil to Europe, received 80 accusations in 2012.  Six of these calls came from women living in Rio de Janeiro state, five from Ceará (the most of any state in the Northeast), five from Goiás, and five from São Paulo.  Two-thirds of the calls were made while women were at risk of being killed, while the other third reported violence towards women outside the country.  The campaign is directed towards trafficking in Spain, Portugal and Italy, but it also heard from women in five other countries.  Read Article
