Brazil: 70 suspects involved in murder, robbery, drug trafficking in “Operation 75”

‘Operation 75’ Arrests 70 Suspects Responsible for Crimes in Sergipe, Brazil

Globo reported on May 9, 2013 that ‘Operation 75’ arrested 61 people and seven teenagers accused of committing crimes such as murder, robbery, and drug trafficking in Sergipe, Brazil. ‘Operation 75’ required the use of 500 civilian police and military officials, 210 arrests and over 52 search and seizure warrants. The police seized seven firearms, seven bikes belonging to the victims of the crimes as well as cocaine and marijuana. ‘Operation 75’ was a result of Hotline 181; an educational campaign created by the Ministry of Public Security (SSP) to encourage people to provide information about crimes and locations of suspects. According to secretary-deputy Joao Baptista, 3,400 people in the Sergipe prison system in 2012 were arrested due to the information provided by the hotline. Read Article
