Belo Horizonte, Brazil: 2,000 Protesters Block Major Highway

Terra reported on June 21, 2013 that a protest of about two thousand people in Belo Horizonte stopped traffic on the BR-040 for at least nine miles. The protest is a result of the increased price in bus fare in Ribeirão das Neves as well as the necessary change in social issues. The mobilization of people in various Brazilian cities to participate in the protest began in Porto Alegre began between March and April, when protesters rallied at City Hall. Soon, the movement moved to São Paulo where force by the police created a scene of violence. Many Brazilian cities felt the ripple effect of the protests mobilizing hundreds of people. Read Article
