Armed force to remain in favelas of Rio de Janeiro until June 2012

Brazil extended until June 2012, the Armed Forces operations in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro, military occupation for almost a year in order to ensure security in these areas before the 2014 World Cup, the government said Monday. “We know that the work of pacification of the communities is among the primary tasks of the Armed Forces, but it is something that must be made in support of state security” in Rio, said Defense Minister Celso Amorim.
