134 Women in Amazonas, Brazil, Arrested in First Two Months of 2013

On March 19, 2013, D24AM reported that the number of women arrested so far in the year 2013 is 134, up 41% from the same time period last year.  The report notes that many women are the wives and girlfriends of other perpetrators, and many are pulled into crime through emotional and mental bonds with their partners.  Police spokesman Orlando Amaral also stated that women make for attractive gang members because of their ability to draw less attention to their actions and access to cronies and networks.  A large portion of female criminals are accessories to the actual crimes, but there are also more female gang leaders than in the past.  Read Article
