12,000 sought refuge in Ecuador during 2012

Some 12,000 people, mostly from Colombia, sought refuge in Ecuador in 2012, the Latin American country most foreigners in need of protection in their home territory, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ecuador. About 56,000 immigrants living with refugee status in Ecuador, which in the last decade has received about 162,000 applications for refugee status, the Foreign Ministry explained in a statement Friday.
