Brazil Will Host UN Committee on Urban Violence in Latin America

Globo reported on June 16, 2013 that two Brazilian jurists will lead a committee by the United Nations this October in Rio de Janeiro, whose mission is to control and offer solutions in regards to increased urban violence in Latin America. The committee will include representatives from 19 countries. The committee will have 18 months to discuss possible solutions to reduce crime such as robberies and homicides after protests such as the current one in Brazil in response to bus fare, and other conflicts including combating corruption and drug trafficking. Data from the UN stated that Brazil spends about US $32 billion a year on safety and that Brazil loses out in the area of tourism due to urban violence discouraging tourists from visiting.
