Peru: Tourists Who Haven’t Purchased Online Tickets Cannot Enter Machu Picchu

According to RPP.com.pe the Regional Director of Culture, Juan Julio Garcia Rivas says the availability of tickets is not their responsibility and that all ticket sales for Machu Picchu have to be made online or through an authorized ticket agency. Rivas says tourists that were not able to enter Machu Picchu in the last couple of days did not purchase online tickets. Tickets for Machu Picchu are sold through a new electronic system that automatically blocks ticket sales after reaching 2,500 sales in a day. Additionally, Rivas says as of January 2011, tickets have not been sold at the entrance of Machu Picchu, as recommended by UNESCO. Rivas blames travel agencies for not alerting their customers of the new rule. Machupicchu.gob.pe shows that there are no tickets available for purchase until October 23rd, where 23 tickets are available. This information was recorded at 2 p.m. on Friday, July 22nd.Read Article
