Cirrhosis – The Fourth Leading Cause of Death in Mexico

The Mexican Institute of National Health (IMSS) in Jalisco states that cirrhosis is now the fourth-highest cause of death in Mexico, El Universal reports, behind heart disease, diabetes and cancer. Although alcohol abuse is still the leading trigger for cirrhosis of the liver, more and more cases caused by Hepatitis C, diabetes and obesity are being reported. Though it has long been believed that there is no cure for the disease, researchers are investigating new medications to treat cirrhosis in its early stages. Specialists at IMSS say the best ways to avoid developing cirrhosis are to be tested for Hepatitis C and avoid obesity and excessive consumption of alcohol. Read Article
