Canadian tourist drowns in Mazatlan

Beware of riptides, currents, and areas designated as dangerous. A Canadian tourist drowned after being swept away by strong currents and waves while bathing in the sea area that is located near the Riu hotel where was staying. The victim was identified by relatives as James Mescalsen, who was 53 years of age, and originally from Canada, and vacationing in Mazatlan. Reports of items Aquatic Rescue Squadron of the Municipal Police say the fatal fact originated at 17:45 hours, when tourists entered to swim to the area being designated as dangerous by officials. The online paper El Diaro de los Mochis also reported when the swimmer got into trouble and asked for assistance, security personel chose not to enter the waters. Apparently a vendor went in to try to rescue him. Ultimately, a police unit retreived him and he had already passed away. Read Article
